Il aura fallu attendre 5 ans pour que Sideburn donne enfin un successeur à son prometteur premier opus "Sell Your Soul (For Rock'n'Roll)". Si ce délai s'explique par un grand chambardement au niveau du line-up dont Roland Pierrehumbert (chant) et Fred Gudit (guitare) sont les seuls rescapés, il n'entraîne cependant pas de révolution au style musical du quintet helvète qui officie toujours dans un Pub-Hard-Rock typiquement…australien !

En effet, ce sont les ombres d'AC/DC, Rose Tattoo ou The Angels qui planent sur les 12 titres de ce "Crocodile" aux riffs aussi acérés que les dents du reptile auquel il se réfère. En effet, impossible de ne pas penser au gang des frères Young sur le Boogie-Rock groovy de "In My Car" ou sur l'efficace "Slave To The Core", ou au gang des 5 tatoués sur le mid-tempo bluesy d'un "Hole Creeper" renforcé de slide ou sur le titre éponyme au tempo soutenu et flirtant avec le Hard-Punk chère à Anderson & Cie. Quant à l'influence de The Angels, c'est surtout dans l'utilisation de l'harmonica par Roland Pierrehumbert et sur des mélodies plus Rocks à écouter sur les highways tels que "Live 4 2 Day" qu'elle se fait sentir. Pourtant, en dehors de la reprise fidèle de "Remedy" et des tonalités de la voix de Pierrehumbert, proches de celles d'Angry Anderson, nous sommes très loin du plagiat. D'ailleurs, Sideburn apporte une touche personnelle à sa cover en y ajoutant le début de "The Butcher And Fast Eddy" sur son final.

En effet, si le quintet suisse s'inspire de ses glorieux aînés, il a su digérer ses influences pour en retransmettre l'énergie tout en imposant une identité propre. Cela nous donne des titres variés et toujours efficaces, dotés de refrains accrocheurs ("Dany And The Devil"), de soli dévastateurs ("Rocking Chair" sur lequel guitare et harmonica se livre à un sympathique duel) et sur lesquels on ne peut s'empêcher de taper du pied et de remuer la tête en rythme. Alors bien sûr, Sideburn ne révolutionne pas le genre mais il y apporte une pierre supplémentaire avec laquelle il faudra compter tant ce combo est capable de pondre quelques hymnes aussi immédiats qu'efficaces ("Hell On Wheels", "The Taker") et dégage une énergie et une authenticité rafraîchissante.

Renforcé par la production claire et puissante de Jurg Naegeli (ex Krokus), ce "Crocodile" permet à Sideburn de franchir un nouveau pallier et de se positionner comme un nouveau membre de la confrérie courtisée de la relève du Pub-Hard-Rock à l'australienne, respectant les figures imposées tout en y apportant sa propre patte. L'ami Nestor vous avez mis en garde contre les hallucinations de kangourous gambadant parmi les vaches dans les pâturages alpins. Quant à nous, nous y rajouterons le risque de morsures de crocodiles lors de baignades dans les lacs des montagnes suisses. En même temps, la morsure est aussi agréable que tranchante, alors laissez-vous faire !

What a rocking album I have selected as this weeks review boys and girls. The bands name is Sideburn and they are a European sensation. Now with influences such as Aussie hard rockers AC/DC and Rose Tattoo you are bound to be getting a great sounding, kick – arse album.

The album Crocodile features an array of 12 stand out tracks, which are a must have for any ones CD collection.

The first track that comes to mind when someone mentions the name Sideburn is the first song off the album “Hell On Wheels”. To me it sums up rock n roll, simply by its first line “You know I was born an outlaw, Leader in my own gang, I don’t give a damn about school, Im the singer of the band”. And if you think this one is a killer then wait to you hear the rest of the song. It’s outstanding in every way possible.

Track 3, “Crocodile” would have to be one of the catchier songs on the album and one of the catchiest songs that I have ever heard from any band in its kind. Its a feel good song that will get you on the floor bouncing away.

“Midnight Woman” is a little bit slower and a little bit bluesy but I can still see all the guys loving this one. A very sexy song about about every guys fantasy “a good time girl”

Midway through the album features a cover song formerly done by one of the boy’s biggest influences Rose Tattoo. The song is titled “Remedy” and fits in nicely with the style of music these guys produce. I know a lot of people don’t like to here songs covered by other bands, but I for one love this version.

“Live 4 Today” is next and this album truly gets better and better as the songs roll on. I am. I have been fortunate enough to be able to review stunning albums and this one is no exception. This song is close to my favourite song, but not quite. Fred’s vocals are amazing and the whole band fits in nicely together.

“The Taker” takes the band to new levels of brilliance. Its song writing at its finest. This song like most songs on the album sounds very tight and very well mixed. They key to a great album is song choice and Sideburn have just about hit the nail on the head with this one.

Finishing off the album are the songs “Slave to the Core” and “Renegade”. To sum things up in a nutshell, it’s the perfect end to a perfect album. I have had a ball listening to this album over and over again writing this review.

Through out all the changes the band has had with its line up it looks like the future for Sideburn is bright.

Am letzten Uriah Heep-Konzert im Z7 bekam ich eine CD in die Hände gedrückt von der welschen Band Sideburn. «Crocdile» ist zwar schon etwas länger draussen, doch besprechen wir die Scheibe lieber spät als gar nie. Sideburn spielen klassischen, bluesbetonten Hardrock mit Rotzfaktor, wenn man das so sagen darf. Pate standen hier AC/DC oder auch Krokus Ende der Siebziger/Anfang der Achtziger Jahre. Schnell und dreckig beginnt es mit «Hell on wheels», um gleich danach mit einem langsameren, groovigen Stück weiterzufahren («Hole creeper»). Die Stimme von Sänger Roland Pierrehumbert passt ausgezeichnet zur Musik und dass die Jungs musikalisch keine Laien sind, hört man vor allem der bluesig-slideigen Leadgitarre von David Parlat an. Echt spitze! Obwohl der Stil von Sideburn offensichtlich ist und man eigentlich vom ersten Ton an weiss, was einen hier erwartet, sind sie doch fähig, durch oben beschriebene Tempi-Unterschiede der Tracks, Abwechslung auf diesen Dreher zu bringen. So ist das Titelstück «Crocodile» wieder schnell und «Midnight woman», das mit einer Harp versehen ist, kommt groovig daher. Ein Cover darf hier natürlich auch nicht fehlen, und so hat man sich «Remedy (good time for rock’n’roll)» von Rose Tattoo ausgesucht. «Live 4 2 day» erinnert dann wieder ganz an die alten Krokus («Bedside radio»). So zieht sich dieses Spielchen durchs Album und sorgt für den nötigen Unterhaltungs- und Spassfaktor. Stellt sich lediglich einmal mehr die Frage, wer nun an diesem «unmodernen» Sound interessiert ist, bzw. bringen alte DC- und Krokusfans ihren Hintern noch ins Kaufhaus, um sich diese Scheibe zu bestellen? Dabei kann man das durchaus empfehlen, denn auch die Produktion von Jürg Nägeli (der hat tatsächlich schon bei «Metal rendezvous» von Krokus mitgewirkt) ist absolut Top. Let's Rock !

Ich habe einen Verdacht: Irgendwo in den unzugänglichen Schweizer Bergen befindet sich ein geheimes Forschungs-Labor, in dem erstklassige Hardrock-Bands gezüchtet werden. Dabei nutzen die Eidgenossen D.N.A. von AC/DC, Rhino Bucket und Rose Tattoo, um als Ergebnis neue Bands auf die Rockfans loszulassen. Wenn das Ergebnis dann so klingt wie SIDEBURN kann ich nur sagen: Mehr davon!!
GOTTHARD, KROKUS und SHAKRA dürften den allermeisten Hardrock-Fans mittlerweile ein Begriff sein.Wesentlich unbekannter, aber nicht minder mitreißend, rocken die Schweizer SIDEBURN. Grund genug, den aktuellen Longplayer CROCODILE im Rahmen unserer Plattenkritiken und die Band insgesamt in unserer Reihe Bandvorstellungen mal genauer unter die Lupe zu nehmen.
SIDEBURN machen kein Geheimnis aus ihren Inspirationsquellen: Mit REMEDY hat eine erstklassiges. ROSE TATTOO-Coverversion Platz auf der Scheibe gefunden, und in diese Kerbe schlägt auch der Rest von CROCODILE. Lässig groovender, bluesgetränkter Hardrock, simpel, riffbetont und mit griffigenHooklines - ganz dem Hardrock-Credo "Keep it simple, keep it rockin´, keep it loud" verpflichtet und in der Tradition anerkannter Größen wie AC/DC, ROSE TATTOO und (vor allem wegen des Gesangs) RHINO BUCKET eingespielt.
Die bluesige Ausrichtung wird dabei durch den gelegentlichen Einsatz einer Mundharmonika unterstrichen, der dem Sound der Eidgenossen eine eigene Note gibt. Klar, das Rad neu erfinden ist nicht das Ding von SIDEBURN; aber wen stört´s? Die Musik der oben genannten Bands ist dermaßen zeitlos und gut, dass durchaus noch einige "Nachahmerbands" mehr davon leben können – jedenfalls dann, wenn es auf so hohem Niveau geschieht! Mit SIDEBURN jedenfalls lässt sich die Wartezeit auf das neue AC/DC-Album prächtig abkürzen. Persönlicher Favorit: Der ultra-coole Groover-Ohrwurm HOLE CREEPER!

Not being very informed on Sideburn, I was plenty curious when contacted just what these guys were about. The name is definitely not a dead giveaway of what you can expect from these guys. Upon listening, the first thing that comes to mind is the bands Sideburn reminds me of. They seem to be a conglomeration of Rhino Bucket, AC/DC and maybe a bit of The Four Horsemen. The band definitely has their own identity though with only hints of those bands spattered here and there on the album. The music is definitely blues influenced with great attitude. The band actually isn't new and dates back to the 80's under the name Genocide. After a few albums the band is now releasing under Sideburn and is really making a name playing the style that 'Crocodile' delivers. The music is no BS to the roots of rock 'n roll music.
Take a listen to the title track and you'll get the point. Some of my particular favorites on the album
include the groove rocker 'Hell on wheels', 'Midnight woman', the very spunky 'Remedy', 'In my car', the catchy 'Rocking chair'. If you don't at least tap your toes to 'Rocking chair' then you may have lost some motor functions. I also dig the closer 'Renegade' for it's all around good vibe.
Overall I was always a big fan of the style of Rock. No nonsense and to the point. Nothing to flashy, but catchy nonetheless. With so many bands out there, bands like Sideburn definitely deserve to be heard, but are sometimes not. I'm telling you to pay attention to these guys, especially if you dig it in the AC/DC/Rhino Bucket vein. It's no wonder why these guys are one of Switzerland's best exports. They get the job done in great Fashion. Nice job guys!

En France nous n’avons qu'un Zidane, les Suisses n'ont pas de Zidane mais possède Krokus, China, Shakra, Gotthard et voici qu'un autre groupe débarque, celui-ci se nomme Sideburn. Crocodile est le nom de cet album, et croyez-moi si vous voulez, ce groupe est à l'image du croco, il a les dents bien acérées et mord à pleines dents dans le ROCK !!!!! D’entrée le son des guitares vous prennent à la gorge, par l’intermédiaire de "Hell on Wheels" morceaux mi-tempo,"Hole creeper" vient juste après, morceau lent mais entraînant, "Crocodile" accélère le rythme, "Midnight Woman" et "Rocking chair" morceaux entamés par Rolland Pierrehumbert avec l’ harmonica, puis nous avons droit une très bonne, que dis-je, à une excellente reprise de "Remedy"
(Rose Tattoo), "Live4.2 Day" riffs très … Ac/dc mais parfait, "Dany and the devil", "In my car", "Taker" d’excellentes compos, "Renegade" termine cet album de bonne facture, donc Il va falloir compter absolument sur ce band plein d'énergies qui possède encore une belle marge de progression. Vocalement Rolland est excellent, quand il pousse sa voix dans les hauteurs de « l'Everest », ces intonations sont à s'y méprendre avec celle de Angry Anderson !!! chaque membres jouent comme il le faut sans en rajouter, tout cela sent bon le rock’n roll, à écouter jusqu’au-delà de la nuit bref on en redemande ! Une excellente découverte qui laisse présager un avenir prometteur pour Sideburn. Je lui donne facilement un 8/10

sicher nicht nur in Insiderkreisen bekannt sein dürfte, ist "Crocodile" doch bereits das vierte Album der Rock'n'Roller (die ersten zwei Scheiben erschienen noch unter dem Namen Genocide). Mit Rock'n'Roll ist dann auch das Stichwort gefallen. Transparenter, klassischer, good time Hard Rock wird intensiv, mit viel groove und ein bisschen Geschrammel zelebriert. AC/DC, Krokus und Rose Tattoo haben es vorgemacht. Hardcore Superstar oder Backyard Babies machen es ähnlich, Sideburn lassen aber jegliche Punkanteile weg. Aufgenommen wurden die 12 Songs (inklusive des toll umgesetzten Rose Tattoo-Titels "Remedy") im legendären Pink Studio, unter der Regie von Jürg Nägeli, der schon seinen Teil zum Erfolg von Krokus beisteuerte. Eine druckvolle Produktion, und eingängige, leicht verdauliche Songs machen diese Scheibe zum idealen Soundtrack der nächsten Party.

Sideburn is a band from Switzerland, it exits since a long time and used to be called Genocide at the start. There was a change of line up : the guitarist Stéphane Monbarron, Pat Aeby and Bozzy left the band to join DC World (the AC/DC and Krokus cover band from Marc Storace - Krokus, China). Stéphane was replaced by David Pariat (Sultan, Skyscraper, Rated X) who is a great lead guitarist. Lionel B. on the drums and Michel D. on the bass also joined the band.
Just for the record Sideburn used to play as opener for Kiss at the Hallenstadium, the biggest hall in Switzerland!!! Crocodile has a self made production so no record company named for this cd. The album was recorded, produced and mixed by Jürg Naegeli which used to work by the time with Krokus. As you can see Switzerland is not big and for sure a small world... So what to say about good old time rock'n'roll from Switzerland, in fact not cheesy at all ;-). This one of the kind that smells like the greatest rock bands from Australia alike Rose Tattoo, AC/DC or The Angels (ex Angel City)
or even Jimmy Barnes. In fact the title Crocodile is maybe on itself a big dedication to the land of Crocodile Dundee.
They also can be compared to southern rock stars like ZZ Top or even Blackfoot. But I would say Sideburn developed its own style since it not called Genocide anymore. They became like an old Whisky bottle getting better with the years by founding their own flavor.
One mention about the cover of Remedy from Rose Tattoo it is brilliant : respect ! These guys should have recorded one song for the Tatt's tribute album Tribute For The Boys, I wouldn't have been angry at all....
There is nothing new under the southern sun (maybe a sunburn on the side ;-)) but for sure it is damn well done. Sideburn is settled like a Swiss cuckoo clock. If you like this kind of rock'n'roll without any compromise then just go for it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crocodile won't bite you, but sure leave you some marks...

Die Schweizer SIDEBURN sind ein gefundenes Fressen für alle, die auf simplen, bodenständigen Rock’n’Roll der Marke AC/DC, Krokus, Rose Tattoo (deren „Remedy“ auf „Crocodile“ erstklassig gecovert wird) Kix oder Rhino Bucket stehen – wobei SIDEBURN letztgenannter Band am meisten ähnein. Im Vergleich mit ebenfalls AC/DC-lastigen Combos wie The Poor oder New American Shame, die ordentlich Gas geben, klingen SIDEBURN eher relaxt und betont cool, was Banausen wir Boris dazu animiert, das Ganze als „Bierschiss-Rock für Stadtfeste“ abzutun. Tststs...
Hätten SIDEBURN etwas mehr Humor (ihre Texte sind noch zu steif, um wirklich cool sien), wären sie die perfekten Nachfolger der viel zu früh abgetretenen Rhino Bucket und eine echte Bereicherung der heutigen Szene, die solche Bands ja kaum noch kennt. Wer ein Herz für unverfälschten Rock’n’Roll OHNE Punk-Einflüsse (nix gegen Backyard Babies & Co. Aber davon
gibt’s inzwischen genug) hat, sollte SIDEBURN unbedingt anchecken. Ignoriert die Wertungen meiner tauben Kollegen !
